چکیده
A recent study sheds new light on the visual cues used by Drosophila to regulate flight altitude. The striking similarity with previously identified steering mechanisms provides a coherent basis for novel models of vision-based flight control in insects and robots.

Altitude Estimation and Control of an Insect-Scale Robot with an Onboard Proximity Sensor
Insect-scale micro-air vehicles (MAVs) require careful consideration of the size, weight and power for each component. The inherent instability of the system, exacerbated by the faster dynamics that result from increasing angular accelerations with decreasing scale, requires high bandwidth sensing to maintain stable flight. The Harvard RoboBee is the first MAV under 100 mg to demonstrate contro...

The most versatile and robust flying machines are still those produced by nature through evolution. The solutions to the 6 DOF control problem faced by these machines are implemented in extremely small neuronal structures comprising thousands of neurons. Hence, the biological principles of flight control are not only very effective but also efficient in terms of their implementation. An importa...

متن کاملDoes wing reduction influence the relationship between altitude and insect body size? A case study using New Zealand's diverse stonefly fauna
Researchers have long been intrigued by evolutionary processes that explain biological diversity. Numerous studies have reported strong associations between animal body size and altitude, but insect analyses have often yielded equivocal results. Here, we analyze a collection database of New Zealand's diverse endemic stonefly fauna (106 species across 21 genera) to test for relationships between...
متن کاملMonocular Vision System for Fixed Altitude Flight of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
The fastest and most economical method of acquiring terrain images is aerial photography. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been investigated for this task. However, UAVs present a range of challenges such as flight altitude maintenance. This paper reports a method that combines skyline detection with a stereo vision algorithm to enable the flight altitude of UAVs to be maintained....
